Our Story

Lila and I met on May 1st, 2010. It was a sunny Saturday and we were both in Seoul that afternoon.

Though neither of us are vegans, we were both invited to the same meatless, rooftop barbecue, and thank god we were, because that is where we first met.

We had our first date the following Friday. We both lived in the same city, so we met at Suwon subway station, which is surrounded by a lively area. Again, by luck, I chose one of Lila's favorite restaurants for dinner.

What followed was a very pleasant summer that culminated in us traveling to Thailand with our friend Gideon VanRiette. We are honored that he will be attending our wedding and serving as best man.

We spent that Christmas apart. I traveled home to Kansas where I told my mother that I thought Lila could be the one. She ran upstairs and returned with a ring.

The new year brought us to Hong Kong for vacation. After a week in HK's minuscule hotels, we knew that we wouldn't be getting on each other's nerves, even under the most uncomfortable of circumstances.

Time flew and somehow we got the crazy idea to move to Spain. Neither of us can remember who's idea it was, or when we decided, but April found us boarding a plane in Vancouver to Barcelona.

After a brief stint in Granollers, Spain, where we completed a CELTA course, we "accidentally" wound up outside of Ankara, Turkey. It was a hot and solemn summer, marked by Ramadan and dehydrated 5th-graders. It is easy to say that we won't soon forget our time in Sincan, Turkey.

September brought us back to Spain, where we lived in beachside Sitges for a month while looking for work in Barcelona. We found it, and moved to the colorful Poble Sec neighborhood. So many good times were spent there, suffice to say that the mood and memories of Spain live on in our hearts.

Christmas 2012 took us to New York City to "meet the parents." The Daneman parents, that is. I carried the ring in my pocket often, and on December 30th, in the American Museum of Natural History, I asked Lila to marry me. There, beneath the Blue Whale, she said "yes."

Back in Barcelona, money was tight, and now planning a life together, we decided to move back to Korea for a year to save money. This year ultimately became 20 months.

In Korea, a year and change was spent in Paju, a city so close to N. Korea that it could literally be seen from one of the higher hills at our workplace. We survived.

On May 3rd, 2014 we moved to Vancouver. It is a wonderful city.

Hopefully, you will see for yourself this August.

IMPORTANT:

We are lucky to be celebrating in both Vancouver (BC) and Kansas City (KC).

We would love to see you at both, and we understand that everyone will do what they can.

Our wedding is on Saturday, August 16th on Bowen Island.

The following Saturday (Aug. 23rd), we are having a "second reception" in KCMO at the Boulevard Brewery.

Please note that the RSVP dates and email addresses are different for each.

Can't wait to see you!

About Bowen Island

Our wedding is on Bowen Island.

As the name implies, Bowen Island is an island.

There's lots to do there. Check it out: BOWEN INFO

Getting to the island is not difficult, check the information HERE

We recommend that you stay with us, so that you can party Friday and Saturday night. There's more info about that HERE.

Once you are on the island, you can walk to the lodge. It is a 5-minute walk according to GOOGLE DIRECTIONS

Just in case that doesn't help, here are the directions in plain English.

1. Exit ferry
2. Walk down the street, and take the first right.
3. Take the next right.
4. You're there.

And if you still can't find it, contact the wedding coordinator (only on Saturday the 16th) at:

Bowen Island Lodge Room Allocation

We have reserved the entire lodge for our wedding.

There are 25 rooms total, but they are first come, first serve. Sorry!
As of July23rd, we have 3 rooms remaining.

As a matter of logistics, we had to reserve the entire lodge for two days.

As a result, we require that our guests stay Friday and Saturday night.

Rooms are for two people and are $100.00 a night. Shop around, you can't beat that price!

For planning's sake, if you know you will be staying with us, please let us know as soon as you can. Thanks. david.and.lila.wedding@gmail.com

One of the great things about the Bowen Island is that there is so much to do there.

You can swim, hike or kayak.

Make sure to bring the necessary equipment if you think you might want to do any of these activities, ie. swimsuit, towel, hiking shoes, etc.

Also, the lodge has a hot tub.

Ferry Information

FERRY WEBSITE:

You have to take a ferry to Bowen Island. It takes about 20 minutes. You can bring your car onboard, if you want.

If you let us know what day you are coming and where you are staying (Friday or Saturday) we can advise you about when to catch the ferry.

On Saturday, the 16th, we recommend the 12:10pm or 2:35pm ferries, in order to be on time.

This is the schedule from Vancouver (Horseshoe Bay) to Bowen Island (Snug Cove).

Coming back is not such a big deal.

We will make an announcement at the wedding 1 hour before the last ferry, and then again 30 minutes prior, so to make sure that everyone gets back to the mainland.

This is the schedule from Bowen Island (Snug Cove) to Vancouver (Horseshoe Bay).

It's not difficult, and if you have any questions, send them to david.and.lila.wedding@gmail.com

Vancouver Maps

From Downtown Vancouver, there are only two buses that take you to the ferry terminal, which is called Horseshoe Bay.

Those buses are the 250 and 257. They run the same route, but the 257 is express.

The 257 is faster, but only a little.

Bus Info:

250 BUS INFO

We recommend that you catch the bus HERE, in front of the Hudson Bay department store.

The bus stop is on Georgia, between Granville and Seymore.

The bus stop is on the north side of the street.

Vancouver Hotel Information

Lila and I have never stayed in a hotel in Vancouver.

There are many, but rooms fill up fast in summer time. Don't delay!

First, we recommend staying with us on Bowen Island. Info on that HERE

But, if you don't stay with us, then we recommend that you stay a) near us in the West End or b) downtown where you can easily catch the bus to Horseshoe Bay.

Near Us:

1) Best Western Plus Sands

2) Coast Hotel

Downtown:

1) Fairmont Hotel Vancouver

2) Rosewood Hotel

Those are nice, but they're a little pricy...

Here are a couple of (more affordable) ideas.

1) Horsehoe Bay Motel

2) Barclay Hotel

3) Travelodge Vancouver Lionsgate

Good Luck!
